SIA Makes History ... Again
In 2004, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. became the first automotive assembly plant to be "Zero-Landfill". In June, SIA captured global attention by becoming the first U.S. car manufacturing plant to become certified in energy management.
SIA complies with the International Organization for Standardization's global energy standards, which are meant to increase a company's energy efficiency.
The SIA team spent six months monitoring energy consumption data in order to figure out how to improve its current processes to gear up for its certification audit, which will be rechecked annually.
The Gift that Gives Back
Dan Vespertino, Director of Service Operations at Subaru of America in Cherry Hill, NJ delivered the keys to the car to Ronald J. DeFelice, Principal of the Atlantic County Institute of Technology and Curt Silver, Technical Instructor at the Academy.
Subaru of America, Inc. will inspire a new generation of students with the donation of a 2011 Subaru Outback to the Atlantic County Institute of Technology's Academy of Transportation Technology.
The donation supports the Automotive Youth Education Systems (AYES), a school-to-career program that is a partnership among leading automotive manufacturers and is designed to encourage young people to consider satisfying careers in the retail automotive service by preparing them for entry-level career positions or more advanced studies in automotive technology.
Along with the vehicle, the academy will have access to some of Subaru's computer diagnostic tools and service information which will help to encourage the students to learn more about a career in automotive technology.

I bought my 2002 Subaru Outback in 2001 when I was a high-paid sales manager for an audio and video cable manufacturing firm. In 2004, my position was eliminated in a corporate restructuring and I found myself unemployed with few prospects at age 56. I had one son starting college, a daughter in high school preparing for nursing school, my wife was seriously ill, and we had only eight months earlier purchased a home with a high monthly mortgage payment.
I started up my own business importing and distributing audio cable, but during its first five years it provided insufficient income, so to make ends meet I also worked as an independently contracted courier making same-day expedited deliveries. I've been doing this now for over 7 years and for some 360,000 business-related miles.
My reliable Subaru truly kept us in our home and kept the lights on through the darkest of times. It got us through these very lean years and saw my daughter finish high school, graduate from nursing school, marry, and eventually buy her own 2007 Subaru Impreza.
Her husband also drives a Subaru and since 2009, I keep a 2000 Legacy Wagon (only 175,000 miles) as a spare vehicle so that my Outback can get a rest every now and then.
I am currently up to 419,000 on my Outback's original engine and transmission and she's running well enough that I am contemplating using her for a trip to Buffalo and Toronto this summer.

Pets and Hot Cars Don't Mix
Subaru of America, Inc., The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA®), and animal care activists can't stress it enough — never leave dogs or other pets locked inside vehicles.
It's a heartbreaking fact that many animals die each summer in hot cars. According to the ASPCA, even with the windows left open an inch or two, it only takes ten minutes for the inside of a vehicle to reach 102 degrees on an 85-degree day.
The APSCA also reports that within 30 minutes, a car's interior can reach 120 degrees. When the temperature outside is a comfortable 70 degrees, the inside of your car may be roasting — as much as 20 degrees hotter.
Shade offers little protection on a hot day and moves with the sun. Pets most at risk for hyperthermia (overheating) include young animals, elderly animals, overweight animals, those with short muzzles and those with thick or dark-colored coats.
Tempting as it may be to bring your cherished pets with you wherever you go, remember that stopping for even a quick errand can cause fatal overheating. Spread the word — even the most loving pet owners may be unaware of the danger.
Did You Know? Fourteen states have enacted specific laws that protect dogs in hot cars, as have many municipalities — but even in places lacking such a law, leaving an animal in a hot car may constitute cruelty.
