Editor’s Note Reclaimed Traditions While each season brings its own customs, perhaps none is as rich with tradition as winter. In addition to the holidays, the season is often a time of re ection on the year that has passed, celebration and anticipation of the one that lies ahead, and time spent with family and friends. It’s appropriate, then, that this issue of Drive is dedicated to reclaimed traditions. In our cover story, Making It Happen (p.19), we introduce you to craftspeople who embrace traditional skills to create everything from handcrafted ceramics to straight razors. Although the movement is constantly evolving, it is rooted as much in history as it is forward-looking. In our feature De ning the Landscape (p.26), we explore a modern take on the ancient art of mapmaking through the work of artist David Imus. Like no other, Imus brings maps to life by recreating geography in painstaking detail, giving viewers an unparalleled true sense of a region. Winter getaways are among our favorite traditions. In this issue’s Road Trips, we explore 48 hours in Moscow, Idaho (p.30), a historic American town rich with outdoor activities and cultural attractions. Finally, I would like to thank you for all of the submissions we received in response to our request in the summer 2016 issue of Drive to share “maker” stories and photos of yourself with a completed handcrafted item. Subaru owners are so talented and passionate, and we are thrilled to share your work in this issue. There is an amazing amount of owners making impressive items, from handmade quilts to guitars crafted from recycled materials, for passion, charity or to satisfy their entrepreneurial spirits. Even my dad wanted to share his new love of making birdfeeders. We hope this issue’s cover story inspires you to get out there and start making things you’re passionate about too. We would love to hear more from you, so please don’t be shy.
