In May of 2015 my eldest son was fast-approaching his 12th birthday, and he really, really wanted a dog. One weekend, we discovered that the Alternative Humane Society of Whatcom County was hosting adoptions at Petco. As soon as we walked in the door, there was Goliath, a 7-month-old American Staffordshire Terrier. Within 10 minutes my two boys were rolling on the floor with him. Needless to say, after a home visit to ensure that we could take care of him, and that we had adequate yard space, he was ours. Goliath had been found near Bakersfield, California, by the side of the road. The Alternative Humane Society brought him up to Washington, and we found him/he found us the very first day he was up for adoption. Fast-forward almost three years and I can say that Goliath is the best dog I have ever had: super smart, good with other dogs, good with people, you name it. Of course, being the breed that he is, he gets three miles of running or hiking every day, rain or shine. Goliath loves his routines. I can count on one hand the days he hasn't gotten his mileage in. All we have to do is shake his leash and collar, and he heads for our 2007 Legacy GT wagon, jumps in the front passenger seat, and off we go. We cannot imagine our lives without "Big Gee," as he is known.
