At Subaru, we care deeply about the environment and take great pride in our commitment to protecting it. That’s why we launched the new Subaru Eco-Friendly Dealer Program. This voluntary program helps retailers reduce their carbon footprint by focusing on five key areas: energy efficiency, water conservation, recycling, waste management, and community involvement. We’ve retrofitted existing dealerships and built brand-new facilities from the ground up, with conservation in mind.

Together with our partner Green Dealer Support, we developed a point-based inspection for retailers. Once a dealership earns enough points in each category, it achieves Subaru Eco-Friendly status. There are 14 certified Subaru Eco-Friendly retailers across the country, with more in development. Eco-Friendly retailers are identified by the official eco-friendly leaf logo found on the dealer search.

Subaru encourages the entire dealership to get involved by establishing an environmental team of individuals from all departments. This cross-functional team implements the dealership strategy to become more environmentally conscious and achieve Subaru Eco-Friendly status. The team also develops, promotes, and communicates the program to the dealership, customers, and the local community.

Energy Efficiency and Water Conservation

Certified retailers install occupancy sensors, compact fluorescent light bulbs, and programmable thermostats for more efficient daily operation. They also reduce water consumption by installing low-flow faucets and toilets and water-efficient landscaping. Retailers monitor their results by registering with The ENERGY STAR Challenge and recording their monthly energy and water costs.

Recycling and Waste Management

Other important responsibilities are recycling and waste disposal. By recycling materials such as paper, metal, cardboard, and plastic, our dealerships help divert massive amounts of them from landfills. Our certified dealers also ensure proper disposal of harmful waste including oil, coolant, batteries, and tires.

Community Involvement

Caring about the environment extends beyond the dealership. Participating retailers get involved in community programs focused on preserving and protecting the environment. These community initiatives help to increase the awareness of the dealership’s eco-efforts. Involvement in community programs such as Earth Day Adopt A Highway®, and Leave No Trace proves to be enjoyable and rewarding time after time.

Leading by Example

Subaru hopes to lead by example. We have made great strides in reducing our impact on the environment by offering Partial Zero Emission Vehicles to all buyers. Our zero landfill plants were the first of their kind. Moreover, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc., has been designated as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.
