Children’s Book Author Donna Love Shares Her Passion for the National Parks with the Next Generation
Acclaimed children’s book author Donna Love has taken a lifelong fondness of the great outdoors and poured that passion into her writing. Love’s beautiful works about nature and the national parks are a perfect example of how picture books can be an enriching experience for kids of all ages. “I was a late bloomer,” she laughs. “I submitted my first manuscript at age 47! I realized I had a real knack for explaining animal behavior to children.”

A Green Playground
Love grew up in western Oregon playing outside. She recalls a time when kids found joy almost exclusively in catching bugs, watching birds, and fishing in lakes, and she is remarkably adept at distilling those sensory moments into her prose. Her books help kids understand the importance of living gently upon this earth, while providing quirky and fun observations that make animals relatable to children.
Love and her husband, Tim, a retired Forest Service Ranger, have visited many national parks together in their 2013 Subaru Forester. Each park has inspired a different story, including one of her most popular books, The Totally Out There Guide to Glacier National Park. “I talk to children about how to be good stewards of the earth,” Love says.
