THE SUBARU OF AMERICA FOUNDATION HELPS THE CHILDREN’S NATURE INSTITUTE (CNI) OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ELEVATE CHILDREN’S UNDERSTANDING AND EXPLORATION OF NATURE THROUGH FUNDING FOR THE OUTREACH DISCOVERY PROGRAM.
The Outreach Discovery Program works with 100 to 200 schools in the Los Angeles area each year, reaching 12,000 to 15,000 3-to-9-year-olds from disadvantaged families. The program features three components that provide these children with hands-on learning to help them develop empathy and understanding for all living things.
The first component is the Wonder Mobile, a traveling classroom that allows kids to explore science and nature through touch.
Next the children take a field trip to a wilderness area that brings the kids face-to-face with nature, usually for the first time in their lives.
The final component is an urban nature hunt in their neighborhood or around their school that makes the children aware of their own surroundings.
CNI was founded by a group of young mothers who realized that part of children’s education should be about nature and understanding the natural environment. Over the years, that has evolved into a school-based outreach program. CNI’s mission is to educate children and communities through hands-on experience with nature and encourage children to explore their natural world.
