STILL THE WILD WEST

Zero One Odysseys is an offshoot of Wide Open Baja, which has been conducting tours in Baja for 14 years with these same buggies. More than 15,000 people have driven these vehicles, which have accumulated more than 4 million miles combined. They are robust, reliable vehicles powered by the same 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine found in a Subaru. They can tackle virtually any terrain.

In all, we drove some 360 miles off the highway during three days. Apart from a couple of punctures, which are virtually unavoidable, there were no problems. The group I was with had a wide variety of participants, from a 25-year-old woman to a 60-year-old man. Individuals can sign up, but many people get a group of friends together or companies put a group of co-workers in a team to enjoy the camaraderie.

You don’t have to drive fast, but once you get the feel for the car, you’ll want to because the feel of the wind through the open windshield is exhilarating, as is the view.

Imagine – you can spend a few days in Sin City with thousands of others, staying up late every night. Then you could top off the week with three days on a Zero One Odysseys adventure, where you spend the days seeing sights you would never imagine existed in what is still the Wild West. What a contrast.
