A subwoofer is a speaker designed to accurately reproduce the low-pitched frequencies of sound, generally known as “bass.” In a vehicle, the frequency of this sound measures less than 125 hertz.

Bass frequencies must be enclosed. Subwoofers usually are contained in specifically tuned medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or molded cabinets to withstand air pressure created by the speakers’ sound waves. They’re also enclosed because a subwoofer’s sound waves are produced from both the front and back of the speaker, and these waves have oppositely phased energies that can cancel each other out. The enclosure separates the front and rear waves, allowing the subwoofer to produce bass.

The output and dynamics of the bass frequencies can be tweaked by completely sealing or venting the speaker’s enclosure.

KICKER® and Subwoofers

Kicker has specialized in bass and subwoofers since 1973, when two college friends began hand-building professional sound systems in a one-car garage in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Since then, Kicker has pushed the limits of audio design technology and performance, winning numerous industry awards for its bass innovations. Kicker acoustic engineers created the world’s first “small-box” subwoofer – the Solo-Baric®, which was made for the smallest custom enclosure ever at the time. Kicker has pioneered features that since have become commonplace among gear produced by speaker manufacturers industrywide.

Altogether, the Kicker technologies give the high-performance audio upgrade sound system powerful, accurate bass for contemporary sound reproduction. The Subaru system features a 10-inch, 100-watt powered subwoofer in a custom-fitted, molded enclosure for the trunk or cargo area, depending on whether it’s fitted to a 5-door or Sedan Impreza model. It’s compatible with all 2008-2011 Impreza sedans; Impreza WRX sedans; 2011 WRX STI sedans; and all 2008-2011 Impreza, Impreza WRX, and WRX STI 5-door vehicles with navigation or non-navigation audio systems.

The subwoofer upgrade leaves ample space for cargo. Plus, they can be removed easily for additional space. An integrated high-efficiency amplifier connects to the existing audio system using a simple plug-and-play wiring harness. The deep, rich bass from such a small space enhances the Subaru sound system.
