Driven By Safety: 2017 Subaru Legacy by Scott Heidbrink Growing up, it always seemed like mom had eyes in the back of her head. It didn’t matter, she could be cooking in the kitchen or driving the family car – she always knew what we were doing and she would react before you knew it. The 2017 Subaru Legacy is equipped with features just like that extra set of eyes and intuition mom had. Subaru EyeSight This available driver-assist system uses Subaru-developed stereo camera technology to monitor the road ahead. It integrates Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Departure and Sway Warning to help identify potential dangers and provide alerts – and even slows down the vehicle when assistance is needed. Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) One of the hardest tasks for a driver is to see behind the vehicle while backing up. The advent of the Rear-Vision Camera, which is standard on Legacy, was a real asset, as it greatly improves rear visibility. But now, an available Reverse Automatic Braking system monitors what is behind the Legacy as you’re backing up. Four ultrasonic sonar sensors in the rear bumper are activated when the transmission is shifted into reverse. On Legacy models equipped with RAB, the 7-inch screen displays the camera’s view of what’s behind the vehicle, while the sensors detect objects in the vehicle’s path. At low speeds, the system gives an audible alert as the driver reverses toward an object. If driver input is not detected, the system automatically applies the brakes and stops the vehicle, thus avoiding the collision. High Beam Assist Driving on a dark road can be a challenge and high beams are an asset to nighttime visibility, but they can be hazardous to oncoming drivers. That’s where High Beam Assist steps in: For optimum nighttime visibility, it utilizes high beams, then, when the forward-facing camera mounted on the interior rear view mirror detects oncoming lights or street lights, it automatically switches to low beams; once no light is detected, it switches back to high beams. We’ve Got Your Back The Subaru Legacy provides safety features that rival mom’s keen sense of intuition, watching out for you every leg of the journey. 2016 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ when equipped with EyeSight Award-Winning Safety Safety and Subaru go hand-in-hand to create a rewarding and secure driving experience for the 2017 Legacy.
