Rocks and Rollin'

My son and I took a trip to the West Desert in Utah with the goal of mining some geodes. We made some stops along the way at the Great Salt Lake, Black Rock and then lunch in Johnson Pass (part of the original Lincoln Highway). We dug in the rock beds for over an hour and found about eight geodes ‒ the hardest part is cracking them open without destroying them. Most were the size of a golf ball, but one was softball-sized. That night, we camped near the geode beds on Bureau of Land Management land and slept in our rooftop tent.

Our 2015 Forester XT got us there and back with no drama, including 60-mph blasts down dirt roads, rocky trails and copious mud.
