Subaru of Daytona Lends a Helping Paw

Winter 2015

Since 2007, Subaru of America, Inc. has donated $50 million to national charities as part of its annual Share the Love event. For every new car sold or leased during the event, Subaru donates $250 on behalf of the purchaser to their choice of participating charities. In 2013, Subaru retailers were able to add a hometown charity to the mix of charities that new vehicle purchasers could choose to help support during the event. What’s more, several retailers provided additional donations to its selected hometown charity.

A love of animals inspired Subaru of Daytona’s partnership with the Halifax Humane Society. “We’re a dog-friendly business. We encourage customers to stop in with their dogs, we have dog treats for them, and I even bring my dog to work on occasion,” says sales manager Jeff Nusbaum.

It was natural for Subaru of Daytona to showcase Halifax during the 2014 Share the Love event. “We got really fired up about upping our involvement with the Halifax Humane Society,” says Brett Serbousek, general sales manager. “Our sales team loved the idea and so did the community.” Subaru of Daytona matched contributions from Subaru of America, totaling $65,000 in donations for the 2014 event.

Doggie Events

The relationship is so strong that throughout the year, Subaru of Daytona and the Halifax Humane Society work together on events like an animal adoption day in the showroom.

Another popular event Subaru of Daytona sponsors is the Fur Ball, a black-tie gala that raises about $100,000 each year. “It’s the biggest charity event in town,” says Larry Kelly, executive of Subaru of Daytona, who himself has three rescue dogs and fosters puppies for the Halifax Humane Society.

Subaru of Daytona and the Halifax Humane Society also collaborated on the Mutt Strutt, a beachfront 5K run/walk. It’s the only time of year that the resort town’s famed beach is open to dogs. Surfboards mark the starting line and Subaru vehicles are positioned at the finish line. More than 4,000 people attend the event, which typically raises about $50,000.

2015 Share the Love Event

The strong relationship Subaru of Daytona has forged with the Halifax Humane Society is win-win. The partnership helps raise money and awareness about the area’s largest animal shelter, while at the same time heightening the auto dealership’s profile. “Subaru drivers are animal lovers,” says Kelly. “It’s a perfect fit.” That’s why Subaru of Daytona has chosen Halifax as its 2015 Share the Love Hometown Charity.
