11/25/2015 Winter 2015 About the Author Evanston Subaru Gives Back: Share the Love Donations Help Support Vets and Pets By Andrea Poe 11/25/2015 Winter 2015 Since 2007, Subaru of America, Inc. has donated $50 million to charities nationwide as part of its annual “Share the Love” event. For every new car sold or leased during the event, Subaru donates $250 on behalf of the purchaser to their choice of participating charities. In 2013, Subaru retailers were able to add a hometown charity to the mix of charities that new vehicle purchasers could choose to help support during the event. What’s more, several retailers provided additional donations to their selected hometown charity. In 2014, Subaru retailers donated an additional $343,607 to their hometown charities. Evanston Subaru in Skokie, Illinois, donated more than $30,000 to two local charities during the 2014 Share the Love event. “What goes around comes around, especially when it comes to bicycling” is the motto of Evanston Subaru Owner Rob Paddor, who happens to be an avid cyclist. During the 2014 event, Paddor featured two charities that are close to his heart, Project Hero: Ride 2 Recovery and Community Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.™). Giving back to his community comes naturally to him. It’s what he’s been doing for most of his 62 years. Caring for Vets Veterans hold a special place in Paddor’s heart. During the 2014 Share the Love event, Evanston Subaru and Subaru of America donated nearly $20,000 to the Ride 2 Recovery program; the 2015 event also will benefit the vets. Evanston Subaru helped raise an additional $62,000 during 2015 as 325 bicyclists rode with wounded and recovering veterans. Paddor has been involved with the charity since 2011, when he rode the route chosen to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11. “I want to take care of our vets. A lot of them need help,” he says. “There was a time years ago when a lot of them were not treated well.” Wanting to bring Ride 2 Recovery into the Chicago area, Fitness Challenge Foundation asked Paddor if he would host the event. Of course, he gave a resounding yes. The race started and ended its three noncompetitive 17-, 38-, and 50-mile loops at Evanston Subaru. Medal of Honor recipient Allen Lynch, on hand for the event, said, “What really impresses me is here you have a lot of severely disabled vets riding bicycles – some guys who lost both legs who are riding bicycles where they have to use their arms. You have guys who have lost their sight riding tandem bicycles. America needs to see that you can do anything you want to do if you put your mind to it.” Caring for Pets Paddor also has a soft spot for animals, which is why he became involved in helping raise funds for C.A.R.E.’s shelter for the past six years. During the 2014 Share the Love event, Evanston Subaru was able to help donate more than $10,000. To build on the success of the event, Paddor hosted C.A.R.E.’s Strut for Strays walk in May to promote pet adoption. At the walk, he also put on a very popular free dog wash, with Evanston Subaru donating $10 to C.A.R.E. for every dog washed, nail clipping included. Interestingly, he noticed that many of the C.A.R.E. volunteers drive a Subaru. Share the Love 2015 This year, Paddor decided to combine a barbeque for the troops with his dog wash day, an irresistible combination. Paddor and Evanston Subaru have decided to repeat the successes of last year by selecting Project Hero: Ride 2 Recovery, Chicago and C.A.R.E. as this year’s hometown charities.
