Amazing Grace

Fall 2015

Subaru of America, Inc. and Subaru retailers help hundreds of hometown charities in local communities across the country with their Share the Love event.

It is reported that one in four women in the United States will be abused at some point in their lives.1 Fortunately, Grace Smith House in Poughkeepsie, New York, is one of a number of organizations nationwide to take a stand against domestic violence, offering help to victims of abuse in their Hudson Valley community since 1981. And for the second year in a row, they’ve received strong support from Mid-Hudson Subaru in nearby Wappingers Falls, New York.

Changing Lives

Under the helm of owner Peter Maher, Mid-Hudson Subaru donated an impressive $43,389 to Grace Smith House – greatly exceeding their gift of $30,000 from 2014 – at a Subaru Share the Love event in March of this year. “To raise almost $75,000 in two years is life-changing for our agency, and for the women and children – the families – that we serve,” says Steven Chickery, board chair of Grace Smith House. “We started a large prevention program … we have three young ladies who go into schools and teach [students] about healthy dating relationships.”

... they serve an incredible need that is not really spoken about very much.

Making a Difference

For Maher and his team at Mid-Hudson Subaru, the decision to donate to the Grace Smith House was a simple one. “Once we [learned] what Grace Smith House was all about, it was kind of easy for us,” he says. “They were local, and they serve an incredible need that is not spoken about very much,” he notes. But the team at Mid-Hudson Subaru didn’t just dash off a check; first they did their own research. “We started to educate ourselves on the issue of domestic violence in our own community, and the numbers were quite shocking,” Maher says, “[Grace Smith House] handles thousands of people a year … we felt we could really make a difference ... and we were right!” The team at Mid-Hudson Subaru has indeed made a difference with their support of Grace Smith House, and continues to set an inspiring example of positive community involvement for others to follow.
