Anniversary Al Fresco

One of the best camping trips I’ve taken was in May 2016. My partner and I returned to where we first met the previous May ‒ a shelter on the Appalachian Trail in Harriman State Park, New York. We had been backpacking separately when Travis approached me and asked where the nearest water source was. The rest, as they say, is history.

This year when we returned, we had the entire ridge to ourselves as we set up our hammocks and gathered wood. Eating s’mores and gazing at the fire, we reflected on our year together.

After spending a rainy night under tarps and in our hammocks, we woke the next day to thick fog – so peaceful and beautiful. We didn’t encounter a single other person on our hike out, but we did see countless orange and yellow salamanders. There’s no better feeling than having an entire forest to yourselves!
