Subaru Superstore Helps Youth and the Young at Heart

Winter 2015

Since 2007, Subaru of America, Inc. has donated $50 million to charities nationwide as part of its annual Share the Love event.  For every new car sold or leased during the event, Subaru donates $250 on behalf of the purchaser to their choice of participating charities. Beginning in 2013, retailers could add a hometown charity to the mix of charities that were supported during the event. In addition, several retailers provided additional donations to their selected hometown charity.

Richard and Lisa Cvijanovich, co-owners of Subaru Superstore in Chandler, Arizona, have found that local Share the Love charities generate the most excitement from customers. “Our clients truly appreciate our organization’s involvement and assistance in supporting the local community the most,” says Richard. And with that local community focus in mind, Subaru Superstore helped donate just shy of $50,000 to its selected hometown charities in 2014.

Supporting Excellence in Education through the Chandler Education Foundation

Last year, Subaru Superstore helped donate $35,000 to the Chandler Education Foundation (CEF), an educational partner of the Chandler Unified School District (CUSD). CEF is committed to lifelong learning, and the Share the Love donations enabled grants to be awarded to area teachers and high school students to assist with continuing education. Lisa Cvijanovich was particularly keen to fund the teacher component, which is a new aspect of the foundation’s program. “Because of the economy, teachers haven’t received raises in six years. For many of them, continuing their education is out of reach. These scholarship programs make it possible,” she explains.

“There’s a very strong correlation between our educational support and the Subaru customer. A high percentage of our clients are teachers and parents; therefore, they see the benefit of choosing to do business with us, knowing we give back to support them,” reveals Cvijanovich. “Share the Love initiatives allow us to develop ongoing and lasting community relationships where everyone wins, which leads to our mutual future success,” she adds.

Helping Those Affected by Alzheimer’s Disease

Additionally, Subaru Superstore helped raise $10,000 for the local Alzheimer’s Association chapter last year during Share the Love. As the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S., this disease affects so many families, and selecting it as the second hometown charity for Subaru Superstore was an easy choice. Making the decision even more meaningful for the retailer and the community was knowing the donation would specifically serve their local community.

Impacting the Future with Share the Love

During this year’s Share the Love event, Subaru Superstore will be featuring the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation (AFFCF), which provides support services to youth in foster care.

“This year we began an internship program with the organization where foster youth who have identified automotive as a potential career opportunity come work with us,” Lisa Cvijanovich says. “Students learn basic work skills and what's expected of them in the workplace. It exposes them as well to our industry, so they can decide if it's the right choice for them. We look forward to adding more students to the program, as it's proven to be a win-win for the youth and for our organization. Best of all, student success is garnering the attention of other employers and helping to expand the program locally.”
